Breaking News...

November 15, 2013

Dear Friends,

Well, this sabbatical deal could only last so long…and after 18 months, I am pleased to share with you the news of my new position as President of Green Stream Recycling which is a new company located on Long Island.

As you would expect, Kim and I are thrilled to be heading back to NY.  We will be looking for a new home as we get ready to sell our home in Scottsdale.  We are especially excited to be back among our family and friends on Long Island.   The last time we lived on Long Island was in 2000 (before we departed for Florida).

The past 18 months have been a blessing – we spent two wonderful summers at our lake house in Wisconsin, traveled across the US and to Alaska, Ireland and Southern France and lived in midtown Manhattan for five months.  But most importantly, we were able to connect with so many of our family and friends.

The new opportunity at Green Stream is a real adventure.  I will be working with some truly talented and remarkable people whom I have known for many years.  The new company is focused on processing recyclable materials.  Essentially, we take the recyclable materials that people place at their curb and sort them into various products.  At a press conference last week, we announced a 25-year partnership with the Town of Brookhaven to operate a large material recovery facility (recycling center) in Suffolk County.  Our plan is to change the way that residents recycle on Long Island and offer better ways to recycle more waste materials.  My first week on the job we purchased more than $3 million of new recycling equipment to retrofit the existing plant.

The next few months will be busy as we construct and install the new equipment while working to grow our business.  Again, I am fortunately to have a really great team of people who will make for a smooth transition.

Kim and I are so very thankful to have this opportunity.  We look forward to catching up with you and will let you know when we get settled in on Long Island.

Fondly,

Will Flower

April 2013

I am wishing everyone a Happy Earth Day on April 22, 2013!

I am pleased to report that I will be giving three presentations at Waste Expo 2013 in New Orleans (May 20 - 23, 2013)!  The subjects that I will cover are:

1.  Preparing for disasters…What to do before, during and after a disaster
2.  Developing and implementing community watch programs that help keep communities safe
3.
Media Relations (for Health Waste practitioners)

Here is a brief summary of each:

Disaster Preparedness and Business Recovery:  What to do before, during and after a disaster

Disasters can occur at any time and any place.  The key is to be prepared and be able to respond quickly when disaster strikes.  This seminar will review the critical steps that you need to take to ensure you are prepared for a variety of disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires and other events.  During the presentation we will stress the importance of emergency planning and business recovery plans.  We will also review the critical need for coordination between private and public sectors, and the importance of good communication and coordination with your vendors, suppliers and customers.  Both government and businesses will benefit from this seminar which focuses on being prepared for the many hazards they face in today’s world.

Being a good neighbor - Developing and implementing community watch programs

The waste industry provides basic, essential services to the communities we serve.  With thousands of trucks and employees out on the streets and in the communities, we can also help communities be safer by acting as an extra set of eyes and ears for the local police and fire service.  The seminar will provide step by step instructions for developing a community watch program that will help communities be better places to live.  Participants will also discover partnerships that can help establish and publicize these important community betterment and public safety programs. Importantly, the program stresses that a drivers job is not to get involved in fighting the crime but rather to understand what to look for and how to report suspicious or criminal activity to local authorities.

Working with reporters and the news media

In this interactive session, attendees will learn the skills and tools needed to effectively communicate with the news media.  Participants will discuss the various types of news media and a variety of tools that will help communicate a clear, consistent and timely message with reporters who may be interested in your business.  We will address proactive and reactive media relations with a goal of presenting your company in the best light.  Finally, we will work through some potential scenarios facing medical waste practitioners to discuss what reporters might ask and how to best respond.

Hope to see you in New Oleans!

May 2012

My friends:

I will be departing Republic Services in May.  My decision to leave Republic was made with considerable thought, extensive consideration and prayer.

I joined Republic in 1999 and over the past 13 ½ years, this Company has provided me with tremendous opportunities to develop, grow and contribute to the creation of some real shareholder value.  When I joined Republic, we only had about $1 billion in annual revenue.  Today, we have more than $8 billion in annual revenue.  We performed exceptionally well over the years as the Company grew in both size and stature.  From 1999 to 2011, our total return to shareholders (share price appreciation plus dividend payments) was more than 200%.  Not too bad!

But for me, the real prize was the many personal friendships that I have developed with the great people with whom I worked.  I have enjoyed working with drivers, supervisors, regional people, area presidents and fellow corporate teammates as we faced and overcame many challenges.  The growth of Republic, the merger of Republic and Allied and the successfully blending of these two great companies will always be fond memories.  I am very proud of the company that Republic has become and I am confident that Republic has the right leadership, strategy, assets and people to be wildly successful.

Looking ahead, I will continue my lifelong passion of working to enhance and protect the environment.  I plan to continue to my philanthropic work with Keep America Beautiful and with the American Red Cross.  As Martin Luther said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

I will remain at Republic Services until May 18.  After that, Kim and I have planned a busy summer including spending June, July and August in Wisconsin where I will catch up on some fishing and waterskiing while hanging out with family and friends.

My hope and expectation is that I remain in contact with you.  I can be reached at:
